On Friday, April 26th, over a thousand people participated in a powerful event to raise awareness about autism in the Iranian cities of Tehran, Rasht, and Mahshahr. Organized by the Iran Autism Association, the “Run for Autism” event saw diverse groups of the community come together in a symbolic walk and run alongside autistic adults. The event, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Youth and the National Olympic Committee, highlighted the growing recognition and support for the autism community in Iran.
Saeideh Saleh Ghaffari, the director of the Iran Autism Association, emphasized the importance of breaking down the isolation often faced by families with autism. She stated that one of the most significant challenges faced by the autism community in Iran is that autistic individuals between the ages of 20 to 40 often struggle to find suitable employment and achieve financial independence. She stressed the need for a more informed and inclusive society that provides opportunities for autistic adults to thrive and lead independent lives.
Ghaffari called on businesses to become more autism-friendly, creating an environment where these individuals can contribute their unique skills and talents. The “Run for Autism” event is held annually to coincide with World Autism Awareness Month, providing a platform for the community to come together in a powerful display of support and solidarity.
