Statement by the Iran Autism Association(IAA) on the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2024

By iran Autism

On this International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we are reminded of the urgent need to address the social and institutional ills that perpetuate poverty. This year’s theme is “Ending social and institutional abuse: Acting Together for Just, Peaceful and Inclusive Societies” is in line with our mission at the Iranian Autism Association to advocate for the rights and inclusion of people on the autism spectrum.

Poverty is more than just a lack of financial resources — it is also rooted in systemic exclusion, inequality and institutional barriers. For people with developmental disabilities, such as those with autism, these barriers are often even greater, limiting their access to essential services, education and employment. However, these challenges are exacerbated by the broader context of sanctions and economic restrictions imposed on countries such as Iran.

As well as hampering the economy, sanctions disproportionately affect vulnerable groups, deepen poverty and restrict access to key resources. For people with disabilities, the impact is particularly severe. The lack of medical care, specialized equipment and educational resources caused by the sanctions makes it difficult for families to care for their loved ones. This institutional abuse at international level exacerbates the already difficult conditions for those on the margins of society.

As an non-governmental organization, we call on the international community to recognize the negative impact of sanctions on human rights, particularly for persons with disabilities. We believe that global cooperation and inclusive policies are essential to overcome the obstacles created by sanctions and achieve a more just and peaceful society.

The IAA remains committed to promoting inclusion, advocating for the rights of people on the autism spectrum, and working with global partners to ensure that every person, regardless of ability or circumstance, has the opportunity to live with dignity and independence.
